S’gor MB wants Bank Negara to review strict housing loan policy

Source : Malaysiakini.com

Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali has expressed hope that Bank Negara Malaysia re-evaluates its stringent housing loan policies.

This is in light of the many complaints the state government received from Selangorku housing recipients over their failure to obtain bank loans, said the PKR deputy president.

“We are aware of the statistics on household debt, which is now too critical and requires Bank Negara to implement a new policy to tighten loan (disbursement).

“But as what has been suggested by the state government, we hope Bank Negara will review this as retail consumption is not the same as housing loans,” he told a press conference after officiating at a groundbreaking event for a new Selangorku housing development project in Puchong.

Priority for loan application approvals must be given to first-time buyers so that they can obtain affordable homes, he said.

“The property industry will be affected if they cannot obtain loans from banks,” he added.

The country’s household debt currently stands at 89.9 percent of the gross domestic product, which is among the highest in Asia.

Bank Negara, however, has expressed confidence that household debt will be maintained at a prudent level due to measures introduced in the last few years, which include its strict housing loan policies.

‘Rent-to-own concept not new’

Meanwhile, Azmin criticised newly-appointed Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Noh Omar over his support for the federal government’s rent-to-own concept.

He said the idea was not new as the Selangor state government had implemented a similar scheme two years ago.

“We have such a scheme and we have already implemented it. Not like the other side (federal government), which has only drafted the cabinet paper.
“I invite the new minister to come to Selangor to learn how we build actual affordable homes,” said Azmin in his speech earlier.

Azmin told the press conference later that the state government had allocated RM10 million for the scheme in 2014 and an additional RM10 million in August last year.

“We started the scheme for the Rimbajaya apartment last year. (And) this scheme will be continued in the future,” he said.

Media Statement: Carnage in Nice

PRESS RELEASE
15 JULY 2016

Carnage in Nice

I condemn in the strongest terms last night’s horrendous attack in Nice that killed at least 80 people and injured scores who were celebrating Bastille Day.

My prayers go out to the victims and their families in this outrageous act of mass murder.

While no group has claimed responsibility yet, there is no doubt that this is another instance of terrorism claiming the lives of innocent civilians including infants and mothers holding their babies.

Whatever may be the reason or cause, these acts of carnage can never be justified. While the attacker – the truck driver – has been killed, the presence of other weapons and explosives points to a pattern of terrorist acts which are being perpetrated across the world, often in the name of Islam.

Let us remain firm in condemnation of these heinous crimes and reject the notion that they can ever be justified in the name of Islam.

The perpetrators of these barbaric and merciless actsare the enemies of Islam. The principle of moderation and justice must prevail and we must stay resolute in our fight against the scourge of terrorism.

Media Statement: Declassify the AG’s Report

Azmin: Declassify the AG’s Report

I call on Prime Minister Dato Seri Najib Razak to immediately order the declassification of the Auditor-General’s report in the interest of transparency, accountability and good governance.

Failure to do so will only serve to reinforce the belief of a conspiracy at the highest levels to cover up the 1MDB scandal.

The Official Secrets Act is a piece of legislation that is intended to safeguard national security and ensure that sensitive intelligence and other confidential information does not fall into undesirable hands.

By no stretch of the imagination can it be argued that the AG’s findings on 1MDB be justifiably classified within this category of sensitive information. Continuing to classify it as such is therefore a blatant abuse of power and executive authority in a manner and degree unprecedented in the history of our nation.

It is most regrettable that instead of listening to the rakyat to do the right thing, the powers that be have doubled down on their threat to prosecute for treason the leaking of the 1MDB report. This is yet another instance of the arrogance of power which is now symptomatic of an administration which considers itself above the law and the requirements of transparency and accountability.

It should be remembered that exposing the truth of the massive 1MDB scandal is not a political game but a duty incumbent on all leaders be they from the government or the opposition. Transparency is sunlight, which is said to be the best of disinfectants against corruption and shady dealings.

Kenyataan Media: Ubah segera status laporan AG

Azmin: Ubah segera status laporan AG

Menyambut Baik Kenyataan Oleh Timbalan Presiden PAS

KENYATAAN MEDIA

13 JULAI 2016

Ampun Tuanku,

Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Raja Muda Selangor ;
Tengku Amir Shah Ibni Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj,

Yang Amat Mulia Tengku Laksamana Selangor,
Yang Amat Mulia Tengku – Tengku dan Yang Amat Mulia Tengku Puan – Tengku Puan,

Yang Berhormat Tuan Speaker Dewan Negeri Selangor dan suami,
Yang Berhormat Ahli – Ahli Majlis Mesyuarat Kerajaan Negeri Selangor dan pasangan,

Yang Amat Dihormati Ahli – Ahli Dewan Di Raja Selangor dan To’ Puan,
Yang Dimuliakan Orang – Orang Besar Istana dan To’ Puan,

Yang Dihormatkan Orang – Orang Besar Daerah dan Isteri,
Yang Berhormat Ahli – Ahli Parlimen dan Ahli – Ahli Dewan Negeri,

Yang Berusaha Ketua – Ketua Jabatan Kerajaan Peringkat Persekutuan, Negeri dan Daerah,

Your Excellencies and Honourable members of the Diplomatic Corps,

Distinguished guests,

Your Excellencies and distinguished guests from the foreign diplomatic corps, I just want to say on behalf of the government and the people of Selangor “Selamat datang dan terima kasih” for gracing our event.

As you know, Hari Raya is a day of victory and celebration for Muslims throughout the world after a month-long spiritual and physical trial in order to raise and intensify their piety towards Allah.

In the context of Malaysia, the Raya celebrations is also an occasion for all the different communities and cultures to join in the festivities in a spirit of goodwill and unity.
In this regard, it is noteworthy that the state of Selangor indeed comprises a multi-racial, multi-cultural and multi-religious society. Here, we focus on the many things we have in common instead of being obsessed with our differences. The principle that guides our governance is moderation and justice for all. We place a high premium on the spirit of give and take, mutual respect and tolerance.

And we have proven over the last 50 years that this motto is not only possible but that Selangor is a fine example of the kind of balance and harmony that the nation needs.

I cannot overemphasize the significance of this. In light of the rising tide of intolerance and the breeding of mutual distrust, we must make a conscious choice for our future generations. The choice is none other than to build on the strengths that we have fostered and maintain a society that is united and harmonious.

In this society, it is of the utmost importance that all the constitutional rights and fundamental liberties of all the citizens are honoured and safeguarded.

Press Release – Guan Eng’s Prosecution: New Low in Malaysian Politics

30 JUNE 2016

Guan Eng’s Prosecution: New Low in Malaysian Politics

Today’s charges against Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng signal a new low in Malaysian politics not seen since the disgraceful and outrageous prosecution of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim almost two decades ago.

However, coming in the wake of a protracted campaign of vilification and character assassination carried out by the administration of Dato’ Sri Najib Razak against my comrade, Guan Eng, this bout of selective prosecution and political persecution comes as no surprise.

These are the concerted actions of a man desperate to hold on to power at all costs, one who would choose to drag the nation through the mother of all scandals and ignominy rather than give up the post of Prime Minister.

Today’s prosecution of Guan Eng also caps a series of events over the week that first saw the sacking of Muhyiddin Yassin and Mukhriz Mahathir, and the suspension of Shafie Apdal from UMNO. This was followed by a media blitz against Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed and the continued rubbishing of the Citizens’ Declaration. In the meantime, a state mufti (not Selangor) has gone on record as labelling DAP members as “kafir harbi”. And now we find Lim Guan Eng dragged into court.

It is patently clear that the charges levelled against Guan Eng under Section 23 of the MACC Act and Section 165 of the Penal Code are politically motivated, vexatious and constitute a gross abuse of executive power. This is apart from the fact that despite the overwhelming evidence of corruption, money laundering and power abuse against Prime Minister Najib Razak, no serious and earnest investigation has been carried out against him, let alone any semblance of a criminal prosecution.

There is a line beyond which power becomes a tool of oppression and injustice. In prosecuting Guan Eng in the face of such exculpating evidence in his favour, Najib Razak has crossed that line. It is true, he has within his command all the organs of power, a power that is now virtually unchecked and uncheckable with the forced passage of the National Security Council Act. But he must remember that even dictators with unlimited power will eventually fall.

The Federal opposition must come together and remain focussed on our singular struggle to rid our nation of the scourge of corruption at the highest places, unshackled power abuse and kleptocracy unlimited.

Let us set aside all our past differences and prejudices and return to the drawing board. We need to forge a consensus, stronger than ever before, and build a solid bloc for the next general election.

Lest we forget, Guan Eng is innocent until proven guilty beyond the shadow of a doubt by a court of law. Let me reiterate that I not only choose to give him full benefit of the doubt but that I am convinced he is innocent of these charges. I am further convinced that if the proceedings are free from any kind of executive interference and the judiciary is not subject to any kind of pressure directly or indirectly, Guan Eng will be acquitted and fully vindicated.

Press Statement – Solidarity for Guan Eng

PRESS RELEASE

29 JUNE 2016

Solidarity for Guan Eng

When I heard the news that Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was about to be arrested, I immediately called him and managed to speak with him just shortly before he was taken in by the authorities.

I told Guan Eng that I am solidly behind him in this very trying moment as he stands persecuted by the powers that be who are obviously hell-bent on undermining him and the State Government of Penang.

Let me make it clear that I have complete faith in the leadership of Guan Eng in his stewardship of the Penang State and I applaud his unstinting efforts at having successfully transformed the State government of Penang as a shining example of transparency, accountability and good governance.

While it is true that the arrest was made in the presence of his lawyer, such action once again raises grave concern over the even-handedness of the investigations and the objectiveness of the Attorney-General’s Office in warranting this latest move.

As I have maintained previously, the extraordinary attention and exceptionally swift response in respect of Guan Eng’s case stands in sharp contrast to the lack of action taken in respect of the innumerable reports against Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Razak.

Make no mistake. These latest moves are nothing but part and parcel of a vicious and relentless conspiracy to discredit Guan Eng and other prominent members of the Federal Opposition.

The onus is on the powers that be to prove that there is freedom from executive interference in criminal investigations and prosecution. This is absolutely essential in a democracy and for the maintenance of the rule of law. Not only must justice be done but it must also be seen to be done.

[ PRESS RELEASE ] Istanbul attack – shocking acts of barbarity

*PRESS RELEASE*

*29 JUNE 2016*

*Istanbul attack – shocking acts of barbarity*

I strongly condemn last night’s brutal attacks at the Istanbul International airport that left 36 dead and 150 injured. My prayers are with the victims and their families. What has been inflicted upon them is outrageous beyond words.

Such acts of barbarity are extremely shocking committed anytime, let alone in the holy month of Ramadan. While it has not been made clear what the motive was, the murder of innocent civilians is completely unacceptable.

Initial reports point to ISIL as the culprits of this heinous crime but regardless of who the perpetrators are, there can be absolutely no justification for such merciless and inhuman acts.

As these extremist homicidal groups will be gloating over their deeds as being in the cause of Islam and jihad, I once again urge all Muslims, particularly community and religious leaders, to firmly denounce and categorically reject all their attempts at hijacking the religion.

Indeed, they are the enemies of Islam preaching hate and violence. Let us stand together against them and collectively fight the scourge of terrorism.

[ PRESS RELEASE ] Murder of Bill Kayong

PRESS RELEASE

21 JUNE 2016

MURDER OF BILL KAYONG

I condemn in the strongest terms the fatal shooting of Bill Kayong this morning in Senadin, Miri. This is cold blooded murder committed in broad daylight and I urge the police to launch an immediate and thorough investigation to bring the culprits to justice.

My deepest condolences and my thoughts go out to the wife and family of Bill Kayong in this most trying time of bereavement.

As an active member of Keadilan, Bill Kayong had dedicated his life to the cause of fighting injustice and the protection of native rights and fundamental liberties. This is a tragic loss not only for his family and loved ones but for the party and the community as well as all those who cherish peace, freedom and justice.
