Yang Amat Berhormat Dato ‘Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali was born on 25 August 1964 in Singapore. In 1968, his father who served as an army moved to Selangor with his family and settled in Kampung Klang Gate Baru, Hulu Kelang, Gombak. Azmin got his early education at Gurney Road School (2), Kuala Lumpur (1971 – 1976). He then continued his studies at Setapak High School, Kuala Lumpur (1977 – 1979) and the Technical Institute, Jalan Cheras, Kuala Lumpur (1980 – 1981). In 1982, he went to the United States to pursue higher education at the University of Minnesota. He graduated in 1986 from the College of Science and Engineering with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Economics. In May 1987, he was awarded a Master of Education in Mathematics and Economics from the College of Education and Human Profession Services, University of Minnesota.
Azmin Ali joined the civil service in 1987 as Special Officer to Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the then Minister of Education. He later served as Private Secretary to Anwar when the latter assumed the office of Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia.
Following the tumultuous events of 1998 when Anwar was removed from office and incarcerated, Azmin plunged headlong into the Reformasi movement and assumed a major role in determining the direction of the newly minted political party which played and continues to play a pivotal in reshaping the political landscape of the nation.
Azmin is a representative of both the Federal Parliament as well as the State Legislature of Selangor, having been elected to office since 1999. He assumed the office of Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) in September 2014 and has since been instrumental in placing Selangor, the state with the highest GDP in Malaysia, more prominently on the regional and global map.
In 2015, he launched a ten-year strategic program to transform Selangor into a Smart State. Among the highlights of his people-centric and developmental strategic thrusts are housing and primary health care for the B40 group, social financing to promote entrepreneurship for those financially disadvantaged, housing, education and transportation while maintaining Selangor’s competitive edge as the most economically advanced state of the nation and a main drawer of foreign direct investments.
Azmin is the author of Membangun Bangsa wherein his vision for the nation and the people is articulated.
Azmin is married to Shamshida Taharin and they have six children. Azmin holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Mathematics and a Master’s degree in Education and Economics from the University of Minnesota.
