Dato’ Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali is the Minister of Economic Affairs under the new administration headed by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad, having been sworn in on May 21, 2018.

Azmin Ali joined the civil service in 1987 as Special Officer to Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the then Minister of Education. He later served as Private Secretary to Anwar when the latter assumed the office of Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Following the tumultuous events of 1998 when Anwar was removed from office and incarcerated, Azmin plunged headlong into the Reformasi movement and assumed a major role in determining the direction of the newly minted political party which played and continues to play a pivotal in reshaping the political landscape of the nation.

Azmin is a representative of both the Federal Parliament as well as the State Legislature of Selangor, having been elected to office since 1999.

Prior to being appointed to his current Federal Cabinet post, he assumed the office of Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) in September 2014 and had been instrumental in placing Selangor more prominently on the regional and global map after having continually maintained the state as the biggest contributor to the national GDP. Azmin relinquished his post as Dato’ Menteri Besar of Selangor on June 19, 2018.

As Menteri Besar of Selangor in 2015, he launched a ten-year strategic program to transform Selangor into a Smart State.

Among the highlights of his people-centric and developmental strategic thrusts are housing and primary health care for the B40 group, social financing to promote entrepreneurship for those financially disadvantaged, housing, education and transportation while maintaining Selangor’s competitive edge as the economic power house of the nation and a main drawer of foreign direct investments.

Azmin’s current portfolio as Minister of Economic Affairs includes the Economic Planning Unit, the Private-Public Partnership Unit and the implementation and Coordination Unit. Pending final announcement by the Prime Minister, other important socio-economic agencies are expected to be included in the portfolio. On the first day of office, Azmin announced that he would be setting new strategic directions for the Ministry as well as taking steps to initiate the reforms as outlined in the Pakatan Manifesto.

Azmin is the author of Membangun Bangsa wherein his vision for the nation and the people is articulated.

In the 14th General Elections, Azmin won both the State and Federal seats of Bukit Antarabangsa and Gombak respectively with massively increased majorities.

Azmin is married to Shamshida Taharin and they have six children. Azmin holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Mathematics and a Master’s degree in Education and Economics from the University of Minnesota.
