Latest 1MDB Bombshell – Bring the culprits to justice

The United States Department of Justice’s (DOJ) latest filing on the 1MDB scandal reminds us once again of the extent of the spread of the cancer of kleptocracy and corruption afflicting the highest rungs of power in the nation.

The latest filing yesterday has revealed the magnitude of the scandal pointing to a whopping US$4.5 billion in ill-gotten gains stolen from 1MDB of which US$1.7 billion in assets is being sought for seizure by the DOJ.

This is fraud committed on a scale that defies belief made more incredible that the main perpetrators are going about their lives with utter impunity. By any basic standards of democracy, any person tainted with such a gargantuan scandal would have been investigated while anyone holding public office would have to be suspended pending resolution of the investigations.

Are we a nation that places trust, integrity and accountability as key requirements for holders of public office or are we a nation that protects corrupt individuals and kleptocrats granting them immunity from investigation and prosecution?

In this regard, it is utter nonsense for the IGP to suggest that this is purely a civil matter. It is well known that the property forfeiture in this case is part and parcel of on-going criminal investigations into violations of U.S. law.

The assets that are sought to be seized by the DOJ are suspected to have been acquired from the proceeds of criminal activities linked to an international conspiracy to launder money stolen from 1MDB.

Even under Malaysian law, forfeiture of property is a very serious process, what more if it involves billions of ringgit of public funds. To suggest otherwise is tantamount to trivialising the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property Act 1988) or the Anti Money Laundering Act 2001.

Is the IGP therefore also suggesting that forfeiture of properties under the said laws are purely civil matters and have nothing to do with criminal investigations?

I call on all lawmakers regardless of political affinity, affiliation or party to make a concerted stand on this latest expose guided by the oath of office as Members of Parliament and demand that the kleptocrats, whoever and wherever they are, be brought to justice.

Our duty is to fulfil the trust of the rakyat and not to betray it. Our duty is to serve the nation and protect its wealth, not to plunder it or allow others to do so with impunity.

Press Statement – Election Commission

9 JUNE 2017

The Selangor Government is engaged in legal action over the unjust redelineation exercise by the EC. We are shocked by the sudden rush and irregular manner with which the dates were fixed today by the registrar of the Court of Appeal for hearing a pending appeal in this action.

As this is a matter of immense public interest touching on the constitutional voting rights of citizens, it is incumbent on the Selangor Government as a litigant to seek an explanation for this puzzling change of circumstances.

First, without giving any reasons, the matter that had been fixed for case management on 6 July 2017 was brought forward to 9th June 2017. Secondly the court registrar insisted on the unreasonably early date of 20 June 2017, in spite of objections from our counsel that the date was not suitable. Our lawyers were told that this was being done on the direct instruction of the Chief Justice.

Again, no reasons were given as to why this early and unsuitable date was insisted upon.

Press Statement – Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, USJ 25, Puchong

Over the last few days, concerns have been raised about the impending demolition of the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in USJ 25, Puchong.

I understand that this demolition is at the initiative of the developer of the area called One City Development Sdn Bhd, who has obtained a court order giving them possession of the temple land. I am also informed that there is now a dispute over this court order.

I have discussed this matter today with YB Ganabatirau, Selangor State Executive Councillor, YB Charles Santiago, MP Klang, YB Gobind Singh, MP Puchong and YB Sivarasa, MP Subang.

In view of the fact that this is an old temple and the concerns raised by the community, I have spoken to the developer concerned and persuaded them to put their eviction of the temple on hold.

I will also be meeting all the relevant stakeholders within two weeks to discuss and find a suitable solution.

Barbaric attacks must be condemned

I condemn in the strongest terms the recent deadly bomb attacks in Manchester and Jakarta which killed scores of innocent victims and injured many others.

Our sympathies and prayers are with the victims and the families and loved ones of those who perished in these vile and horrific attacks. Sadly, these vicious attacks are occurring all too frequently coinciding with the resurgence of acts of violence and disturbance linked to IS and other militant activities.

These barbaric and ruthless terrorist attacks are totally indefensible and no excuse or justification should be accepted. All the perpetrators must be brought to justice.

Meantime, we should all take lessons once again of the danger and threats that face us on account of religious fanaticism, the culture of animosity and hatred and the spread of radical teachings and extremist ideology in the name of religion.

These violent and vicious attacks which have led to horrendous loss of lives in addition to the recent spate of violent clashes in Marawi City in the Southern Philippines must serve to underscore the paramount importance of moderation, tolerance and justice which all of us must strive to preserve.

Nevertheless, we urge the public to remain calm and not to resort to causing unnecessary tension and alarm. Constant dialogue and mutual engagement must remain the key to preserving our communal harmony, unity and understanding.

Media Statement: Trump Muslim ban is racist, inhumane and totally unacceptable

I categorically condemn President Donald Trump’s executive order banning refugees and travellers from several Muslim-majority countries.

While Trump has claimed that the measure is taken to counter terrorism, it is clear that it is an act of blatant racism, in keeping with Trump’s campaign pledges to build walls of prejudice and animosity against minorities and immigrants around America.

This ban also violates basic principles of international conduct governing the treatment of refugees fleeing war and persecution, fundamental human decency and the elementary rules of humanitarian behaviour that should be observed by civilized nations.

More alarmingly, this ban signals a new phase of state-sponsored Islamophobia, which, if unchecked, will be demonstrated in various ways in both domestic and foreign policies that will collectively have a detrimental effect on the international front and global measures to counter terrorism and other forms of religious extremism.

President Trump, in his new-found position of great power, should be building bridges based on shared values and cultures that could bring East and West, Muslim and non-Muslims closer particularly in these trying times instead of devising policies to isolate and marginalise Muslims, sowing animosity and hatred.

In the meantime, Prime Minister Najib Razak’s silence on the matter speaks volumes about his position more so considering how publicly he has praised Trump’s accession to office and his pledge to work closely with the new administration.

Questions are raised as to this apparently inexplicable wall of silence on the part of Putrajaya and whether it has anything to do with some ongoing international investigation by the Department of Justice.

I therefore call on the Prime Minister to do the right thing and to make a clear stand on this ban just as all right-minded parties and organisations, regardless of race, nationality or religion have done so.

Kenyataan Media – Membuka tirai Malaysia Baru

26 JANUARI 2017

26 JANUARY 2017

The nation is in the grip of an economic crisis and a breakdown of governance of unprecedented proportions. Consequently, the people are suffering while our national pride and honour is at stake.

This crisis warrants nothing less than leadership which is principled, of integrity and one that is respected by the people. The people must remain united and this can only come about with a proper consensus among the political parties, NGOs and individuals who are committed to reform.

The people of Malaysia have grown accustomed to a two-party system. The people are ready for greater reform. Leaders must therefore have the requisite humility and willingness to unite in order to fulfil the aspirations of the people.

Recent developments point to the winds of change sweeping the national political landscape demanding that leaders of political parties review their overall strategy to win the hearts and minds of the people.

Pakatan Harapan was formed. The establishment of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) is aimed at restoring the original struggle for the cause of Islam and the Malays. These developments herald the coming of a new tsunami that is set to be unleashed in the coming 14th General Elections.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat (KEADILAN) stands ready to play its role in strengthening the political coalition of progressive parties and to enhance the level of cooperation and partnership to an even higher level in the name of fulfilling the people’s legitimate expectations.

In this regard, KEADILAN welcomes the recent statement by YB Lim Kit Siang that DAP is willing to work with all parties, including PAS to topple BN. I regard this as a positive step towards the strengthening of the coalition of all relevant parties with the interests of the people and the nation being treated with the highest priority.

This requires wisdom and an inclusive approach and the setting aside of partisan differences for the overarching objective of saving the nation from the shackles of corrupt leaders and a government of kleptocrats.

The future of the nation and the people is at stake. It is only through the unified strength of progressive parties working closely that we can defeat BN, even as it appears to be in the throes of death.

However, we can only achieve consensus through discussion and negotiation which is a complex process. Patience and understanding from all sides is vital but it is imperative that we do this for the sake of the people and the nation. Yet, I am confident that we can succeed if it is done in the spirit of give and take, mutual trust and of sacrifice for the greater good.

I recognize and understand the focus that is currently being given by the top leadership of PAS with regard to their 2017 annual party conference which will be held soon.

I believe that the PAS leadership has wisdom and experience. I daresay PAS members also want a clean government and that they are committed to the principles of justice and of fighting corruption to save the country for our future generations.

KEADILAN will continue discussions and negotiations with PAS, PPBM and other parties in order to bring about a better Malaysia. Our programs for the welfare of the people remain paramount and are progressing smoothly particularly at the state and grassroots level.
