PRESS STATEMENT | 8 SEPTEMBER 2014
Failure to fulfill promise to repeal Sedition Act is unIslamic
I refer to the statement by Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on 7 September 2014 that the government has made no decision to repeal the Sedition Act 1948. The whole nation is shocked and appalled by this statement which directly contradicts Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Najib’s repeated promises to repeal this draconian law. This is a clear admission that Dato’ Sri Najib, the government and the Barisan Nasional (BN) have been blatantly lying to the Malaysian public.
Dato’ Sri Najib first made the promise in July 2012 in the run – up to the 13th GE, in what was a clear ploy to persuade Malaysians to vote for BN by promising to do away with an unpopular and unjust law. Dato’ Sri Najib then repeated the promise in July 2013 in a BBC interview. Then, as recently as 30th August 2014, the PM’s department confirmed in a press release that the Act would be repealed. Again, just two days ago on 5th September, the PM confirmed that the Act would be repealed.
Tan Sri Muhyiddin’s claim that there is no decision to repeal comes just two days after Dato’ Sri Najib’s latest promise to repeal on 5th September. Who is the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Sri Najib or Tan Sri Muhyiddin ?
Dato’ Sri Najib and his government are now guilty of deliberately deceiving the Malaysian people. What is their explanation for failing to fulfill their repeated promise ?
The breaking of a promise by a leader to the people is a serious wrong in Islam.
We call upon Dato’ Sri Najib and the government to drop all sedition charges pending in court and to immediately repeal the oppressive and undemocratic Sedition Act 1948.
