Press Statement – Crackdown an abuse of State power

23th May 2013
I condemn the arrests of Tian Chua, Haris Ibrahim, and Tamrin Ghafar under the Sedition Act purportedly over a recent anti-electoral fraud ceramah in Kuala Lumpur.

The latest crackdown by the police is, as I had warned in my last posting, a return to the days of Mahathir when the first response to the people’s assertion of their civil rights is the use of police power. Those responsible for this abuse of state power will eventually have to answer for it.

Starting with the totally unwarranted charge against Nik Nazmi for the resounding success of the Kelana Jaya rally, Adam Adli has now been charged with sedition while many more were arrested last night for keeping a candle light vigil. With a new Home Minister trying to outdo his predecessors in being high and mighty, and Najib remaining in ‘elegant silence’, we certainly can expect more arrests and prosecutions of opposition leaders and civil rights activists.

I call on the people to remain steadfast in their pursuit of freedom and justice. It is our constitutional right to assemble peacefully and to voice out our anger and unhappiness with the cheating and the fraud. They are trying to frighten us into submission. We must continue to stand up for our rights and our dignity.
