Selangor confident of exceeding affordable homes target

Fariza Mohamad Jelani’s dream to own a house is going to become a reality with the launch of Rumah Selangorku in M Residence 2 in Rawang today.

The 31-year-old contractor said with the escalating property price and the high cost of living, she never thought that she could afford to buy a house.

“Those working in the private sector normally earn below RM5,000 and to buy a property anywhere near Kuala Lumpur is beyond our budget. Rawang is not too far from the city centre and the facilities here are quite advanced.

“I could not believe that I am able to buy a property so soon and at a very affordable price of RM170,000,” she said when met at the Rumah Selangorku groundbreaking ceremony in M Residence 2.

Fariza and more than 100 low-income and middle-income earners registered their interest for Rumah Selangorku during the ceremony.

Mah Sing Group, the developer of M Residence 2, have allocated two blocks of apartment with 488 units in their M Residence 2 project, 560 units in M Residence 1 and 490 units in their upcoming M Residence 3 project for Rumah Selangorku.

All the units have three bedrooms and two parking bays. The blocks are gated and guarded and complete with amenities such as communal playground, surau and multipurpose hall.

Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali who launched the ceremony said the support of the private developers was important to ensure that everyone in Selangor could afford to own a house.

“Owning a house is basic human rights and the Selangor government is working very hard to ensure that more affordable houses are built to fulfil the rising demand,” he said, adding that with the strong support of private developers, he believes that the state government could exceed their target of building 15,000 affordable homes in the next two years.

In fact, he said, more than 8,000 units of affordable homes had been launched in the last two months.

He added that private developers should ensure that the projects are of high quality and do not give rising cost as an excuse to compromise on quality.

Meanwhile, Selangor Housing, Building and Urban Settlers Management Committee chairman Iskandar Abdul Samad said claims by certain quarters that the state government was not looking at building more low-cost houses in the under RM42,000 category is untrue.

He said developers are only excused from building such low-cost houses if there is no demand or if there is no public transport in the area.

“We look at all aspects before accepting developers’ request to not build the low-cost houses. In areas such as Petaling and Ampang, there is no more land to build houses, hence the lack of low-cost houses there.

“However, the state government is looking at refurbishing old apartments for this purpose. We need the support of private developers to make this happen,” he said.
